South Los Angeles Building Healthy Communities.
South Los Angeles Child Welfare Initiative - The South Los Angeles Child Welfare Initiative is a collective effort that seeks to decrease child welfare involvement for children 0-5 in two geographic areas in South Los Angeles. The South Los Angeles Child Welfare Initiative supports South LA agencies to build their capacity in order to move beyond risk reduction, and incorporate the kinds of strategies necessary to enhance protective factors as suggested by the research in the field. Initiative strategies:
-
Training and coaching to introduce practice changes at the individual staff level, and adjusting operations to enable effective implementation of new approaches.
-
Investing in executive leadership, which includes supporting the development of the next generation of staff leadership within participating organizations.
-
Increasing the knowledge and capacity of various formal and informal entities and networks within the community to contribute to enhancing protective factors among community members (kinship networks, home based child care providers, hairdressers, neighborhood elders etc.)
-
Establishing a joint advocacy plan and strategy for introducing policy changes supportive of prevention and early intervention strategies that are consistent with this approach.
