Outreach and Advocacy

Community health centers grew directly out of the war on poverty in the 1960s, and therefore play a critical role in moving a progressive public health agenda forward. At St. John’s Well Child and Family Center, we have a long history of promoting social justice, health, and well-being for residents of South Los Angeles. The inequitable distribution of healthcare resources has spurred our collaborative effort with community members and other groups to remove the social, financial, environmental, and political barriers that stand in the way of equitable health access. Meaningful community engagement is a core value that permeates our work and has fueled our success to date.

Approximately 80% of families in South Los Angeles live in substandard and slum housing. To address this injustice and its affect on the health of our community, St. John’s has developed a comprehensive and holistic approach to health and housing that improves the health of our patients.

As part of this process, St. John’s collects records the dramatic improvements in the health of the children we serve and publishes and shares this information with political leaders who impact public policy and social change.
