Right To Health Committee
The Right to Health Committees is a patient-led community organizing project with the mission of working to fix the broken health care system in South Los Angeles by ensuring that our health care is affordable, accessible, of high quality and provided by people with quality jobs. The Right to Health Committees collaborative includes St. John’s Well Child and Family Center, Service Employees Union International-United Healthcare Workers West, Strategic Actions for a Just Economy, Esperanza Community Housing Corporation, and Service Employees Union International Local 721.
Based on community assessments, patient input and member discussions the following goals, policy targets, and activities were identified:
Goals:
- Establishing a base of leaders in South Los Angeles that will advocate for improvements in their health care
- Improving health outcomes and access to quality care in South Los Angeles
Policy targets:
- Protecting Medicaid
- Preserving funding for community health centers were developed through a similar process
Strategies: Advocacy activities in support of these priorities has included:
- Phone jams
- Petitions, and letters to elected representatives
- Actions at the offices of elected officials
- Delegations at public meetings
- Collecting stories on the importance of existing services.
The Right to Health Committee meets every fourth Wednesday of the month from 6 to 8 pm at our Frayser clinic on 58th and Hoover. As of November 2011, almost 400 people (383) have attended at least one Right to Health Community meeting. |
